However, unlike a kingpin suspension, a ball joint front end will break the ball joints if they are lowered or raised too much & the joints are allowed to reach their maximum angle. In theory, they are both the same front end suspension-wise. The fact that VW doesn't have them on the ball joint front ends was another thought. Unless you’re Bo and Luke Duke, there shouldn’t be any issues Cooter. With dropped spindles, narrow beam without stops and a sway bar, with the car jacked so the tires are off the ground, my shocks don't hit their maximum extension. Again, if you get a dropped car high enough while driving to hit the top of your shocks you’re doing it wrong. They also didn’t sell cars with narrowed beam and dropped spindles. Most just swap out the beams so if you want these you’ll probably have to buy an old stock beam and cut them off. If you get your car to extend far enough to hit the limit of your shocks, you’ll have other more significant damage to address. My car was missing the bump stops on its narrowed front beam when I bought it. If you cut them away you need to make sure the tires don't hit the body. The stops are often missing on aftermarket beams, on lowered cars because they limit lowering, and off-road cars to achieve increased suspension travel. Generally shocks can be used to limit compression, but not extension. Sedate cruising on relatively smooth roads with a watchful eye for road hazards shouldn't prove a challenge to the safe stock travel range. If you drive with the thought in mind that if you exceed the travel limits of your shocks they will likely incur damage, then the bump stops aren't technically necessary. GOFUNDYOURSELF, quit asking everyone to do it for you!Īn air cooled VW will make you a hoarder.ĭo something, anything, to your project every day, and you will eventually complete it. The bump stops are there to limit the travel of the suspension, without them the next thing that will limit the travel is the shock absorber which will destroy them in short order if the limits are ever found.Įverybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
